Truman Continues its Reign at the Top

For 22 years in a row, Truman has earned the distinction of being the No. 1 public university in the Midwest region according to U.S. News & World Report.

Truman also earned the No. 8 spot overall in the Midwest region among both private and public institutions that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs.

As is commonly the case, Truman fared well on the Midwest region Best Values list, coming in at No. 2 overall. It is the highest-rated public school on the list and the only one to make the top 10 in the subcategory.

The 2019 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings also included some web exclusive recognitions, and Truman stands out in terms of faculty and innovation. In the Midwest region, Truman was tied for No. 5 overall on the Best Undergraduate Teaching list. It was the No. 1 public university and the only one among the 23 schools to be highlighted.

Truman is in elite company in the Midwest region on the list of Most Innovative Schools, coming in tied for No. 6 overall. Truman was again the No. 1 public school, one of only two on the list of 16.

The U.S. News & World Report honor came just weeks after Washington Monthly named Truman the No. 7 master’s university in the nation.

The Washington Monthly rankings are unique in that they place an importance on social mobility, research and service. Along with traditional benchmarks such as graduation rates and costs, schools are rewarded for criteria including the number of first-generation students enrolled and the number of students contributing to community service projects, serving in ROTC and going on to serve in the Peace Corps. Additionally, Washington Monthly looks at the number of bachelor’s recipients who go on to earn a Ph.D. and the success rates and earning potential of students 10 years after enrollment.

Earlier in 2018, Truman was the highest-rated Missouri public school to be included in the 2018 Best College Values ranking conducted by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.

Kiplinger combined public schools, private universities and private liberal arts colleges into a single comprehensive list and rated the 300 Best College Values for 2018. In total, eight Missouri institutions are on the Kiplinger list. Rated against its Show-Me-State peers, Truman was by far the best financial option, coming in on average with an annual cost nearly $20,000 lower.

Along with its comprehensive list, Kiplinger also rated the 100 top values in public colleges. Again, Truman was the highest-ranked Missouri institution, coming in at No. 19 overall. In terms of affordability for out-of-state students, Truman was No. 8 on the list for public schools.

Kiplinger’s quality measures, which are weighted more heavily than cost, include admission rate, percentage of students who return for their sophomore year, student-faculty ratio and the four-year graduation rate. Cost criteria include total costs, financial aid and average debt at graduation.
